Introduction

While researching background materials and scouting locations for his version of the story of the mutiny on HMS Bounty, David Lean became interested in another tale - the discovery and salvage of one of Captain Cook's missing anchors, cut loose from one of his ships in August 1773, off Tahiti. Lean approached South Pacific Television with a proposal to make a documentary about the salvage operation, and subsequently worked on the script with Robert Bolt. The resulting documentary won the London Festival Choice Award at the 24^th London Film Festival in 1980.
