The Best Music in Film

Otomo Yoshihide

(Avant-garde musician and composer for Japanese films)

S&S: What is your favourite film soundtrack music and why do you like it so much?
"Kaidan (directed by Masaki Kobayashi music and sound designed by Toru Takemitsu, (1964)). I love Toru Takemitsu and Takeo Yamashita's sound tracks very much"
S&S: In what ways does music best enhance a film?
"It is just depends on the film and director's direction and ideas I am always trying to forget the ways to make soundtracks when I start making film music and try something new for me or for all the film stuff anyway the sound (not only music) is very important and some times more important than images."
S&S: Which film either has music that you wished you'd written or is one you would like to rescore and why?
"I've never thought about re-composing a score for someone's completed film. I think if a film is finished, it is conceptually complete. So if you need to re-score it, you should also change the film images with it, like a re-mix CD."
