The Best Music in Film

S&S: What is your favourite film soundtrack music and why do you like it so much?
"Since I grew up with and grew into electronic music, I have always loved the Vangelis score to Blade Runner (1982). He had a way of capturing the mood of the what's on the screen. When I hear one of the compositions from Blade Runner I visualize the scene that it accompanied. I think that's the greatest challenge of composing music for film."
S&S: In what ways does music best enhance a film?
"When it doesn't get in the way. I like how the music in Kill Bill vol.1 (2003) set up the drama more than the actual scene (Daryl Hannah in the nurse's uniform)."
S&S: Which film either has music that you wished you'd written or is one you would like to rescore and why?
"I wouldn't re-score someone else's work. If the director felt the original music fit best, then that's the way it should be. The music for Scarface (1983) sucked but the movie's still a hood classic! I would rather start with a silent film and base the music around the actions of the performers."
