The Best Music in Film

Robert Farnon

(Composed the music for Raoul Walsh's Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N.)

S&S: What is your favourite film soundtrack music and why do you like it so much?
"Henry Vth (1944), in its marvellous balance of music and sound effects. The music was good in the battle scene that it didn't need any sound effects."
S&S: In what ways does music best enhance a film?
"As an old romantic, I'd say music always adds to the romantic effect. A battle scene will work well enough with just sound effects, but you need music for romantic moments"
S&S: Which film either has music that you wished you'd written or is one you would like to rescore and why?
"The first battle scene in Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. (1950)"
