The Best Music in Film

Lisa Gerrard

(Composed music for The Insider, Gladiator, Ali and Whale Rider)

S&S: What is your favourite film soundtrack music and why do you like it so much?
"My Favourite film is Stalker (1979), directed by Andrei Tarkovsky with music by Eduard Aremiev, I love this film because to partake in it you must use your own imagination, and it is a poetic science fiction that is capable of crossing the bridge of the voyeuristic and places you into an experience of haunting intimacy."
S&S: In what ways does music best enhance a film?
"Music is the last character in the play, it is the toll for story telling that either reveals the sub text or conceals it from the audience, it also help us to feel the deeper reactions of the actors."
S&S: Which film either has music that you wished you'd written or is one you would like to rescore and why?
"My favourite film score is Nina Rota's for Fellini's Satyricon (1969); I feel that this music achieves everything that I would love to be able to achieve with film score because it is completely unique, evocative in its simplicity and uses invented language, it is pure innovation because no one knows what music sounded like at this time, I also love the invented musical instruments in the film, aromatic and captivating."
