Peter Greenaway followed his international arthouse hit The Draughtsman's Contract with this extraordinary tale of obsession. The zoologist twin husbands of two women killed in a car crash start an affair with the female driver, who has had a leg amputated; then the story turns really strange. Tirelessly provocative, sexy, funny and stylish, the film also pays tribute to Vermeer, delves into man's relationship with animals, and explores the attractions of lists. Michael Nyman provides a thrilling score and cinematography is by Sacha Vierny.
