Note: Kevin Brownlow is an eminent film historian, whose books include "The Parade's Gone By" (1968). He first commenced work on the book, after having been approached by Lean who wanted somebody to interview him about his life with the intention of using this as the basis for an autobiography. Interview sessions commenced in January 1990 and on Lean's death in April 1991, Brownlow decided to complete the book himself, supplementing Lean's personal reminiscences with those of people close to him throughout his life.
